Girls are denied education

119 million girls

are out of school worldwide

12 million girls

every year are married as children—that’s 22 girls every minute

In areas of severe poverty or conflict, girls often experience unfair treatment. They’re kept out of school, subjected to abuse—some are even forced into child labour or child marriage.

This shouldn’t be the story for any girl, anywhere.

We’re changing the story through child sponsorship

For every year of education a girl receives, her earning potential soars by 20 per cent. When girls learn, they are empowered to stand up for their rights and break free from cycles of abuse and poverty.

Through child sponsorship, World Vision Canada advocates for girls’ access to education, nutrition, health and safety. We protect girls from exploitation, opening doors to a brighter future. Sponsorship funds real change in vulnerable places that benefits not just one girl, but her whole community.

Held back by dire poverty, Sarah’s parents’ last resort to survive was a dowry. But, Sarah fought to get an education, and her sponsor helped make that possible.

How does child sponsorship promote girls’ education?

Sponsoring a girl helps remove barriers to education. We partner with communities to build long-term solutions that transform her community and give her opportunities to learn, grow and achieve her dreams.

For $49 per month, your donation could help her gain:

Girls get books, school supplies and tuition fees. Their teachers receive training and we set up local classrooms for easier access to education.

Communities get access to clean water and healthy sanitation. We also work to reduce classroom barriers or stigma around menstruation.

Parents gain valuable skills that lift them out of poverty, freeing daughters to pursue education and focus on their future.

A full belly fuels a full mind. Girls receive nutritious food and necessary health care to keep them excelling in school.

Girls understand their rights and rise above gender inequality. Their parents and community leaders learn how to protect and value them.

“We were missing school every day [due to menstruation]. When a girl doesn’t attend school, she may not achieve her dreams. After the sponsors constructed washrooms for us, the academic performance of girls has improved a lot. There are pads for girls during menstruation when at school.”

“[My] sponsor would write to me, asking me how I was doing and that encouraged me. That motivated me to study hard. I knew that once I completed my education and got a good job [as a midwife], I could help the next generation of kids.”

“I have met several girls too, who grow up insecure, grow up without self-esteem. The truth is that my life has changed a lot. I am very grateful to World Vision because it has given us great support to our community, not only here but to many others.”

“[Things] have changed quite a bit. They are different now. I have learned that a man has to respect a woman because they are all equal. I would like to have children after I finish all my studies. I am going to study first.”

Frequently asked questions

Equity in education means providing resources and support for students’ individual needs. Students have different circumstances and starting points; gender, race, disability and culture all play a part. World Vision aims to level the playing field by addressing a girl’s education needs so that she has a fair opportunity to reach her full potential.

It costs $49 per month to sponsor a child with World Vision Canada. That's about $1.60 per day—less than a cup of coffee. And yet, this tax-deductible donation provides a girl with access to education, safe water, nutritious food, health care and more.

Through World Vision’s programs, we give girls a fighting chance to complete their education and realize their dreams by addressing the unique challenges they face. For girls who have access to education through sponsorship, we see:

  • Child marriage rates decrease
  • Income potential increases, breaking the cycle of poverty
  • Maternal mortality rates drop
  • Child mortality rates drop

In 2024, we reached 7.6 million girls and boys with programs that promote sustainable change in vulnerable places. World Vision Canada is recognized by Charity Intelligence Canada as a Top 10 International Impact Charity. Over the past five years, 84.9 percent of funds went directly to programs, 10 percent to fundraising and 5.1 percent to administration. We also have regular independent audits conducted by KPMG to ensure accuracy and transparency. Learn more in our latest Annual Results Report.

Our approach to child sponsorship is community-led and child-focused, which means we pool sponsorship donations together to maximize impact. We connect with communities to understand their unique needs. Then, your donation goes to work, funding programs that benefit not just one girl, but her whole family and community. This approach multiplies impact—for every child sponsored, four more benefit.

Child sponsorship lasts until your child finishes school or their community becomes self-sustaining. Depending on their age, this could be ten to twelve years. It’s a long-term investment that changes a life and community. The relationship you develop with your sponsored girl can be beautifully rewarding as you invest in her future.
